Issuing College:

BCCOHP

Barbara Host is a former dental hygienist registrant of the BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP).

Following a direction from the Inquiry Committee on March 4, 2024, Barbara Host signed a consent agreement (the “Agreement”) with BCCOHP under s. 36(1) of the Health Professions Act (the “HPA”).  She has resigned from the BCCOHP register and agreed to never apply for reinstatement as a dental hygienist in British Columbia.

Background

In November 2023, the Inquiry Committee initiated an investigation under s. 33(1) of the HPA to determine whether Barbara Host had engaged in the unauthorized practice of dental hygiene.

During the investigation, Barbara Host confirmed she had been working as a dental hygienist from September 2019 to October 2023 while holding non-practising registration, had not met the requirements to allow her to be reinstated into a practising category or class, misrepresented her registration status to her employer, and would accept full responsibility for her conduct and the consequences flowing from such conduct.

Admissions and Undertakings

Barbara Host admits that she:

  • knowingly engaged in the unauthorized practice of dental hygiene by providing dental hygiene services while holding non-practising registration
  • misrepresented her registration status to her employer
  • understood she must not practise or provide dental hygiene services while holding non-practising registration
  • continued to practise dental hygiene knowing that she did not meet the requirements to reinstate her practising registration and did not have professional liability insurance
  • Provided an undertaking to the former College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia in 2008 that she would not repeat her conduct in practising dental hygiene while not registered to do so

Barbara Host has undertaken to:

  • resign from the BCCOHP register
  • never apply for reinstatement as a dental hygienist in British Columbia

Resolution

A panel of the Inquiry Committee considered and accepted the agreement as a resolution of the complaint, the Inquiry Committee has determined this to be a serious matter under s.39.3 of the HPA requiring publication.
