Dental hygienist licences

This licence category is available to dental hygienists who have graduated from a dental hygiene program with a diploma or degree accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) or the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) * and have completed successfully the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination (NDHCE). 

This licence category is available to dental hygienists for the purpose of participating in or conducting an educational program or course, or administering or delivering an examination or assessment, that is sponsored by an agency approved by the licence committee.  

General licensing requirements  

  • Holds current licence or registration in another jurisdiction as the equivalent of a licensed dental hygienist in BC and is not subject to any practice restrictions, limits or conditions relevant to the practice of a licensed dental hygienist in BC. 

Licence conditions  

  • may be granted for a period not exceeding 30 days and may be granted again to a previous temporary licensee 
  • may only practise dental hygiene for the purpose described above and must not practise dental hygiene on a fee-for-service basis.  

Certification to administer local anesthesia

Certification to administer local anesthesia (LA) is optional in BC. Dental hygienists who are authorized and certified to administer local anesthetic in BC have their certification displayed on the public register and their licence cards. 

Licensed dental hygienists who are certified to administer LA must renew their certification at annual renewal. Licensed dental hygienists who no longer wish to administer LA can opt out of LA certification and would no longer be certified to administer LA.

If you do not already have LA certification, you are required to successfully complete a BCCOHP-approved LA course and/or demonstrate eligibility to perform local anesthesia in another Canadian jurisdiction of practice within the past five years.
