Note: One of the three main ways BCCOHP protects the public is by ensuring that oral health professionals are able to practise competently throughout their careers. Quality assurance is an important part of this work. As a health regulator, we remain focused on and committed to protecting public and patient safety in BC’s oral health care sector. The change outlined below is a step toward building equity among existing programs and will not impact patient safety.
This message contains important information regarding updates to the denturist quality assurance program (QAP).
Establishing a modernized quality assurance program (QAP) for all oral health professionals is a priority for BCCOHP under our 2024-27 Strategic Plan. While work towards a new program is underway, BCCOHP’s Quality Assurance Committee has directed one early change to the existing QAP for denturists. This change is intended to begin building equity among existing programs, while continuing to prioritize patient safety.
What’s changing and when
Effective April 15, 2025, the “Practitioner Review” will be removed from the QAP for denturists.
This means that denturists practising in BC will no longer be required to undergo the “Practitioner Review”, which required a mandatory phone call with BCCOHP staff every five years regarding practice protocols.
What you need to know
All practising denturists must still complete all other components of the existing denturist QAP, including:
- continuing education (CE) credit requirements,
- practice hours,
- the QA Checklist, and
- the QA Tool.
