We’re pleased to announce the publication and upcoming in force date of BCCOHP’s Professional Standards for the Oral Health Team (Professional Standards). These unified standards take effect for all oral health professionals regulated by BCCOHP on June 30, 2025.

We are publishing and sharing the standards now to provide time for oral health professionals to review the document before the standards come into force on June 30.
These new standards outline the minimum expectations for ethical conduct, performance and professional behavior for all oral health professionals in BC. Developed as part of BCCOHP’s commitment to modern, effective regulation, they are designed to support professional accountability and help ensure consistent and competent care across professions.
One clear set of standards: Same expectations, simpler format
This single, unified document brings together four existing sets of professional standards; however, the expectations remain the same—what’s changed is the format: clearer, simpler, and easier to apply in day-to-day practice. By aligning and simplifying, we hope it’s easier to understand how the standards apply to your role, and easier to reference in your day-to-day practice.
Highlights of the new professional standards:
– Clearly stated, measurable expectations for oral health professionals
– A principle-based framework that creates space for professionals to use their judgment
– Plain language to improve understanding for both professionals and patients
All oral health professionals are responsible for reviewing the new standards in preparation for the upcoming transition.
Transitioning from the legacy practice resources
On June 30, the comprehensive Professional Standards for the Oral Health Team will replace a number of legacy college practice resources that are currently in place. Certain legacy practice standards remain in place to address specific areas of care that pose higher risk to patients. These are clearly marked as such, and oral health professionals should visit the “practice resources” page of the website to confirm the full suite of up-to-date expectations.
