Laura Shoemaker is a denturist registrant of the BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) currently practicing at Laura Chrenek Denture Clinic in Salmon Arm, BC.
In July 2024, the Inquiry Committee initiated an investigation under s. 33(4) of the Health Professions Act (HPA) to determine whether Laura Shoemaker had engaged in the unauthorized practice of denturism.
Following the investigation, the Inquiry Committee determined that Laura Shoemaker had engaged in the unauthorized practice of denturism when she did not hold registration with BCCOHP and had breached two previous undertakings to not engage in the practice of denturism when not registered to do so. The Inquiry Committee determined that the matter could be resolved through a Directed Education Agreement (DEA) under section 36 of the HPA.
Resolution
Laura Shoemaker signed a DEA acknowledging that she engaged in the unauthorized practice of denturism and consented to receive a reprimand for acting contrary to the HPA by engaging in the unauthorized practice of denturism. She has undertaken to:
- ensure she is registered with BCCOHP if she engages in the practice of denturism in BC and not to repeat the conduct of practising denturism while not registered to do so;
- respond fully and substantively and in a timely way to all communication from BCCOHP;
- successfully complete the Medical Ethics and Professionalism Course provided by PBI Education within six months of signing this DEA, at her own cost.
A panel of the Inquiry Committee considered and accepted the DEA as a resolution of the complaint and has determined this to be a serious matter under s.39.3 of the HPA requiring publication.
