CPSBC’s regulatory requirements for physicians providing sedation and general anesthesia in non-hospital based dental facilities

This was distributed to potentially impacted sedation and general anesthesia facility owners via email on December 15, 2023.

In early 2024, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC) expanded their Physician Practice Enhancement Program (PPEP) to include assessments of anesthetists who are providing sedation and/or general anesthesia services in non-hospital based dental facilities. CPSBC registrants (physicians) working in community-based dental settings will be held to the relevant standards set by CPSBC. While these standards are not specific to BCCOHP registrants, facility owners and physicians can refer to CPSBC’s Accreditation Standards for Anesthesiologists Providing Services in Dental Facilities for guidance. BCCOHP facility assessments continue to be required and are separate from CPSBC PPEP.
