One of the foundational ways that BCCOHP protects the public is by setting standards for the delivery of safe and patient-centred oral health care.
When BCCOHP was established in 2022 through the amalgamation of legacy oral health colleges, existing practice resources were ported over with the understanding that eventually, all legacy practice resources may be rescinded and replaced by new BCCOHP professional and practice standards that apply to all regulated oral health professionals.
Each new standard is thoughtfully considered and developed with necessary expertise. BCCOHP’s standards framework consists of two types of standards:
Professional standards are the core requirements that oral health professionals must meet to act professionally and ethically.
The professional standards are written for the whole oral health team, patients and the public, the professional standards are contained in a single document and include:

Practice standards are additional requirements for high-risk areas of oral health care, such as sedation and infection prevention and control.
BCCOHP is developing new practice standards. The following practice standards are currently under development:
Existing practice standards remain in place until the new practice standards are developed. The current standards will be considered in the development of the new standards.
