Standards for the Oral Health Team

One of the foundational ways that BCCOHP protects the public is by setting standards for the delivery of safe and patient-centred oral health care.

Oral health professionals must meet clinical and ethical expectations for practice. They are accountable and responsible for understanding and interpreting any limits or conditions that might appear in Ministry Regulations and BCCOHP Bylaws regarding restricted titles and scope of practice.

Have questions related to practice or defined restricted activities? Please reach out to BCCOHP’s Professional Practice team

Standards and Practice Resources

  • BCCOHP’s Professional Standards for the Oral Health Team are in effect for all oral health professionals. These comprehensive new standards outline the minimum expectations for ethical conduct, performance and professional behaviour for all oral health professionals in BC. They are designed to support professional accountability and help ensure consistent, competent care across the professions. Read the announcement here >>

Resources

Eventually, all legacy practice resources will be rescinded and replaced by new BCCOHP standards that apply to all regulated oral health professionals. Learn more and review the inventory of documents replaced by these new standards here>>

Translated versions

We have translated the professional standards into the five most commonly spoken languages in BC other than English to support broader access. These include Chinese (simplified and traditional), French, Punjabi and Spanish.

Practice standards are additional requirements for high-risk areas of oral health care. While BCCOHP is in the process of rescinding and replacing all legacy practice resources, certain legacy documents remain applicable. Click through by profession to access applicable resources.

Critical Incident Report

Cases resulting in the need for patient resuscitation, emergency transfer, referral and/or admittance to hospital, or death, must immediately be reported to BCCOHP’s Registrar by phone (672-202-0448, toll-free within Canada: 1-888-202-0448).

You must also submit a Critical Incident Report to the Registrar’s office.
